Pilgrims Round

These are Hilary's instructions. She wanted this music to be available free of charge to children and people connected with Penrhys and the Pilgrimage.

I was asked to compose a singable round for young musicians to be sung at Llandaff Cathedral as a way of celebrating the opening of the Penrhys Pilgrimage Path. As a result I composed a "Pes" (for poor singers), a "Round" (for average singers), and a "Descant" and "Interlude" (for more advanced singers). All would be synchronized by the down-beats of the leaders'/pilgrims' staffs. The score and mp3 (below) show the different versions. The Pes is derived from the opening notes of the hymn, Cwm Rhondda -- appropriate for Penrhys. The key is Eb -- the key of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau. The tempo is "walking pace".

  • Below, you have the round, with words in English and Welsh. (Pilgrims' Round - Samples corr.musx). The Pes is included at the beginning and should continue throughout if possible.
  • You have the Descant and Descant Interlude (Pilgrims' Round - Descant corr.pdf) for those singers who are more advanced. These additions may or may not be included, depending on the comfort of the young singers.
  • You have a version of the score (Pilgrims' Round Final corr. - Score.pdf) beginning with the beats of the pilgrims' staffs, followed by the tune of the round, followed by the round in four parts, followed by the descant with the tune, followed by the descant interval, followed by the round (4 parts) with descant added, and a fade-out ending.
  • The mp3 (Pilgrims' Round Final 2.mp3) is the Finale version of the score above. The score is not a performance version of the piece, rather, it gives examples of how the piece might be performed -- as a tune (with or without Pes), as a round, as a round with descant ... and so on. Depending on the registration, a round with female voices might be followed by a round with male voices and so on. The music is open for interpretation and variation.
